Manchester United in advanced talks for Carrick permanent role
Michael Carrick is in negotiations for a two-year contract with an option for a further season, following a recommendation from club executives to minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has confirmed that his future at the club will be decided shortly, as negotiations continue for a permanent two-year contract with an option for an additional season. The interim manager, who assumed control of the first team in January following the departure of Ruben Amorim, stated that the resolution is imminent and will not distract from the team’s focus on the remaining fixtures of the Premier League season.
Club officials, including chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, have formally recommended Carrick as the permanent successor to Sir Jim Ratcliffe. This recommendation is viewed as a strong indicator that Carrick’s installation as the permanent head coach is now a matter of timing rather than uncertainty. While club representatives have declined to comment on the specific status of the talks, an official announcement is not being ruled out before the upcoming Premier League match against Nottingham Forest.
Carrick’s tenure has been marked by significant on-pitch success, with the club securing a place in next season’s Champions League and ending a two-year absence from the competition. He has won 10 of his 15 league games in charge, a record that has earned him a spot on the six-man shortlist for the Premier League Manager of the Season award. United currently require only one point from their final two league games to guarantee a third-place finish.
The upcoming fixture against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford holds additional significance as it will serve as the farewell appearance for departing midfielder Casemiro. Carrick confirmed that the 34-year-old Brazilian will be available for selection and indicated his intention to address the supporters after the match, following the tradition established by former boss Sir Alex Ferguson. He emphasised the importance of thanking the fans for their support throughout the season and his personal four-month tenure.
Support for Carrick’s appointment appears widespread among the squad and the fanbase, with most players backing his continuation in the role.
