Manchester United have reached a breakthrough in negotiations with Brighton, agreeing a transfer fee of up to £70m for midfielder Carlos Baleba. The deal, finalised on Friday evening, allows the 22-year-old Cameroon international to complete his medical with the Old Trafford club this weekend. The fee is structured as an initial payment of £65m, with an additional £5m in potential add-ons, while Brighton have secured a sell-on clause for future transfers.
The acquisition represents a significant financial saving for United compared to the valuation Brighton reportedly placed on the player as the 2025 transfer deadline approached. Baleba, who joined Brighton from Lille in August 2023 for £23.2m, is currently sidelined with an ankle injury sustained during pre-season training in Austria. His eagerness to move north reportedly helped accelerate the conclusion of the deal.
This signing brings Manchester United’s total summer spending to £153m, following the earlier arrivals of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. The move addresses a pressing need for midfield reinforcement after the departure of veteran Brazilian Casemiro, whose contract expired, and the serious knee injury sustained by Manuel Ugarte during World Cup duty with Uruguay.
Head coach Michael Carrick faces the immediate task of integrating Baleba into a squad that also includes England international Kobbie Mainoo, who is available for the upcoming Premier League opener against newly promoted Hull City. The timing of the transfer is critical as United prepare for their league campaign, having recently lost a 4-2 pre-season friendly to AC Milan.
Beyond his primary role in midfield, Baleba’s versatility offers Carrick additional tactical options. As a left-footed player who has occasionally featured at left-back, Baleba may provide cover for Luke Shaw. This flexibility could influence whether United continue their search for a dedicated left-back, or rely on Baleba and regular right-backs Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, who have both been deployed on the left in previous seasons.
