How Sancho's dream Man Utd move ended as a nightmare
Winger leaves club almost three years after last Premier League appearance

Manchester United have confirmed the departure of Jadon Sancho after deciding not to activate an additional year on his contract. The 25-year-old winger leaves the club almost three years after his last Premier League appearance for the team, which occurred on 26 August 2023. United issued a brief joint statement thanking Sancho, alongside Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia, for their contributions and wishing them luck for the future.

Sancho’s tenure at Old Trafford began with a £73m transfer from Borussia Dortmund in July 2021, a move he initially described as a "dream come true". However, the reality of his time at the club proved significantly different, characterised by limited playing time and a public dispute with former manager Erik ten Hag. His last full 90-minute appearance for United was in the 2024 Community Shield, where he played for just seven minutes.

The relationship between Sancho and Ten Hag deteriorated in September 2023 after the winger was omitted from the matchday squad for a game against Arsenal. Ten Hag criticised Sancho’s training performances, prompting an immediate social media response from the player, who accused the manager of making him a "scapegoat". The stand-off lasted four months before Sancho joined Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the season.

Following a complex series of loan spells at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, and Aston Villa, Sancho’s most recent club activity was making his 29th appearance for Aston Villa in the Europa League win at Lille. At Chelsea, United had previously paid a £5m penalty clause to avoid a permanent transfer, opting instead to recall him to Old Trafford. Upon his return, he was placed in manager Ruben Amorim’s 'bomb squad' and trained away from the first team before joining Villa on 1 September.

The financial implications of Sancho’s departure were highlighted in March 2025, when minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe expressed dismay regarding the ongoing costs. Ratcliffe noted that United were still paying half of Sancho’s wages and faced a £17m payment to buy him in the summer. Current United interim head coach Michael Carrick has praised Sancho’s technical ability and creativity, though he noted the challenges of maintaining top-level performance within a squad.
