A new three-person commission is expected to hear any appeal. Premier League regulations cited by BBC Sport say an appeal should conclude within 12 weeks of filing, with a decision within 30 days after that. The timing remains uncertain, and a separate appeal against any eventual sanctions could follow.
Possible outcomes include a points deduction severe enough to send City into the relegation places, or expulsion from the Premier League. Expulsion would require 15 rival clubs to support a motion. City would then need to seek re-entry through the Football Association, while acceptance by the EFL would not be automatic.
The prospect of criminal proceedings remains unconfirmed. BBC Sport says it contacted UK authorities and received no indication that an investigation had begun, while noting some agencies do not routinely confirm investigations.
The Independent Football Regulator says it will await developments while the Premier League proceedings remain ongoing. It says it may assess owners, directors and executives where appropriate if there is clear evidence of individual wrongdoing.
