Manchester City secure Khadija Shaw amid domestic double success
Manager Andree Jeglertz credits professional handling of transfer speculation as club prepares for European expansion

Manchester City striker Khadija Shaw has signed a new four-year contract with the club, effectively ending weeks of speculation regarding a potential departure to Chelsea. The announcement was made on Monday during the team’s celebratory parade at the Co-op Live arena, where 19,000 fans gathered to mark the club’s recent domestic double. The 29-year-old described the process as taking “a while” but confirmed her commitment to the club, stating that Manchester is her “home”.
The retention of Shaw follows a historic season in which Manchester City secured the Women’s Super League (WSL) title and the Women’s FA Cup. Shaw finished the league campaign with 21 goals in 22 matches, claiming both the Golden Boot and the WSL Player of the Year awards. Her contribution was pivotal in the FA Cup final, where she scored the opening goal and provided an assist in a 4-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at Wembley.
Manager Andree Jeglertz emphasised the strategic importance of Shaw’s presence, noting that the club’s system is specifically designed to maximise her goal-scoring opportunities. He praised her professionalism in handling the intense media scrutiny surrounding her future, which had created an “emotional rollercoaster” for supporters. Jeglertz credited the staff involved in the negotiations and affirmed the club’s intent to continue building around her talents as they look to expand their success.
The domestic double marks a significant shift in the landscape of English women’s football, ending Chelsea’s six-year dominance of the WSL and securing City’s first FA Cup title since 2020. Shaw’s five goals in the FA Cup this season made her joint top scorer in the competition alongside Chelsea’s Sam Kerr. The victory at Wembley provided a decisive moment in a final where Brighton had dominated the opening 30 minutes, with Shaw’s header shifting the momentum in City’s favour.
Despite their domestic dominance, challenges remain for the club as they prepare to return to European competition. Manchester City have not participated in the UEFA Women’s Champions League this season, allowing them to focus on squad depth without the distractions of continental fixtures. Former City striker Ellen White and ex-England forward Sue Smith have noted that the squad must evolve to handle the rigours of balancing domestic success with European football in the coming season.
