Manchester City secure Elliot Anderson in £116m record transfer
The 23-year-old England international becomes one of the most expensive British players, joining a City side that has fended off United competition to complete the deal.
Manchester City have confirmed the acquisition of midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for a fee of £116m. The 23-year-old England international has signed a five-year contract that runs until June 2031, marking a significant investment by the club under new management. The transfer, which exceeds the £100m City previously paid for Jack Grealish in 2021, was initially agreed upon during the World Cup and finalised on the eve of England’s Group L match against Panama.
Anderson joins a City side undergoing a managerial transition, having replaced Pep Guardiola in June after a decade in charge. Former Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has taken the helm, and City director of football Hugo Viana described Anderson as one of the outstanding young midfield talents in the world. Viana cited the player’s energy, work rate, and exceptional passing range as key attributes, suggesting that Anderson has the potential to develop into a complete midfielder over the coming years.
The midfielder expressed strong determination to complete the move, stating he was eager to test himself at the highest level. Anderson, who joined Nottingham Forest from Newcastle United in 2024 for £35m, played a pivotal role in helping the club finish seventh in the Premier League and qualify for Europe for the first time in 30 years. His performances also made him a key figure in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, where he featured in every game at the World Cup.
City fended off competition from Manchester United to secure Anderson’s signature. The club’s sporting hierarchy viewed the acquisition as a strategic move to maintain dominance, with Anderson noting the club’s relentless winning culture as a primary motivator. He stated that as soon as City expressed interest, he was committed to making the transfer happen, aiming to establish himself in the team immediately upon his return from a break.
The deal places Anderson among the most expensive players in British history, although the record was briefly surpassed by Morgan Rogers’ £117m transfer from Aston Villa to Chelsea. The signing represents a major shift in the Premier League’s financial landscape, occurring alongside other high-profile moves such as Alejandro Garnacho’s loan to Aston Villa and Christos Tzolis’ arrival at Arsenal. Anderson’s arrival signals Maresca’s intent to build a squad capable of sustaining trophy contention in the post-Guardiola era.
