Makhachev extends Octagon record but faces scrutiny over offensive output

Islam Makhachev retained his UFC welterweight championship at UFC 330 in Philadelphia, securing a unanimous decision victory over Ian Machado Garry. The 34-year-old champion extended his undefeated streak, which dates back to October 2015, and broke Anderson Silva’s record for consecutive wins inside the Octagon with his 17th consecutive victory. The scores were 49-46 twice and 48-47.

While Makhachev recorded significant moments, including a flush head kick in the second round that dropped Garry, the challenger’s defensive improvements forced a grueling contest. Garry, who previously faced Shavkat Rakhmonov in 2024, improved his takedown defence significantly, stuffing every attempt from Makhachev. Despite this defensive resilience, Garry was criticised for a lack of offensive activity throughout the five rounds.

UFC President Dana White provided post-fight criticism, stating that Garry lacked an ounce of killer instinct. White noted that had the challenger taken more chances rather than logging a moral victory in defeat, he might have secured the title. Garry’s performance, however, demonstrated that Makhachev is vulnerable against larger, more dangerous opponents who can maintain distance and avoid compromising positions.

In the co-headliner, Mackenzie Dern successfully defended her women’s strawweight title by dominating Gillian Robertson. The 33-year-old Dern displayed improved wrestling, securing powerful double-leg takedowns in the first two rounds and threatening with submissions. Her striking was described as fluid and accurate, allowing her to outclass Robertson on the feet while firmly establishing her status as a defending champion.

Dern’s performance contrasts with her previous title win against Virna Jandiroba, which many viewed as a consolation prize following the brief exit of two-time champion Weili Zhang. Dern expressed her desire to remain active, stating she aims to solidify her position as champion. The gap between Dern and a potential return from Zhang, who recently failed to win the flyweight title, appears to be closing.

Elsewhere on the card, Dustin Turner returned from a brief retirement to defeat Kaue Fernandes via knockout in 39 seconds. Turner, who had lost four of his five bouts prior to his hiatus, secured his second consecutive first-round stoppage, following his victory over Edson Barboza in December 2024. Turner’s resurgence positions him as a potential contender in the lightweight division.

The main event has raised questions about the future of the welterweight division. With Garry proving Makhachev can be pushed, fighters such as Carlos Prates and Michael Morales have emerged as compelling potential opponents due to their size, length, and power. While Makhachev remains the pound-for-pound king, the nature of this victory suggests that sustained dominance against elite opposition may require more offensive firepower than previously observed.
