Following a meltdown where Santillan allowed four runs on two home runs without recording an out, manager Terry Francona turned to Pierce Johnson for a save chance, suggesting a loss of trust in the right-hander. This decision has created uncertainty over who will secure the save role, with Graham Ashcraft also noted as a potential option despite not having recorded a hold since March.
In San Francisco, the Giants optioned closer Ryan Walker to the minors after he allowed seven earned runs in his last four appearances.
