LSU secures first 2027 defensive back commitment as Markez Davis joins recruiting class
Defensive backs coach Corey Raymond identifies the Northwest High School prospect as a prototypical fit for the program’s defensive scheme.

LSU has secured the verbal commitment of Markez Davis, a three-star cornerback prospect from Northwest High School in Opelousas, Louisiana, to its 2027 recruiting class. The addition marks the program’s first defensive back commitment for the cycle, signalling a continued push to strengthen its secondary under the current coaching regime.
Davis, who stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 180 pounds, is recognised as a multi-sport athlete with a significant background in basketball, having scored more than 1,000 career points. While he plays both wide receiver and defensive back in high school, LSU defensive backs coach Corey Raymond projects him primarily as a cornerback, citing his physical frame as ideal for the position within the Tigers’ system.
Raymond’s track record of developing elite cornerbacks at LSU has drawn comparisons between Davis and former Tiger Greedy Williams. Both prospects are noted for possessing physical traits that align with the coaching staff’s preferences, despite entering recruitment with lower initial ratings. Davis has expressed eagerness to be developed under Raymond’s guidance, leveraging the coach’s proven history of refining defensive talent.
The commitment contributes to what has been described as a surging momentum in LSU’s recruiting efforts, often referred to as “The Lane Train.” This period of activity has seen the program secure key early additions, with Davis serving as the inaugural defensive back for the 2027 class. The coaching staff’s focus remains on identifying high-upside athletes who fit their specific developmental model.
Beyond the signing of Davis, reports indicate that LSU is actively working to secure another elite prospect for an official visit in the near future. The program is preparing for a busy weekend of campus visits, suggesting that the recruitment drive is far from concluded. As the 2027 class takes shape, the Tigers continue to build their roster with an emphasis on physical versatility and defensive potential.
