LSU, Georgia set early standard in CBS Sports’ Week 1 report card
LSU earned an A+ for its 51-10 win over Clemson, while Georgia received an A for dismantling Tennessee State 63-3.
LSU and Georgia were among the leading performers in CBS Sports’ assessment of College Football Week 1, though the report cautioned that many national championship contenders faced overmatched opponents.
LSU received an A+ after turning its anticipated clash with Clemson into a 51-10 win. CBS Sports highlighted an improved rushing attack and disruptive defence, describing it as the week’s most impressive performance by a title contender.
Georgia earned an A for its 63-3 victory over Tennessee State. The Bulldogs scored touchdowns on their first five possessions and forced five consecutive three-and-outs to begin the game, while 15 players caught passes and 31 defenders recorded tackles.
Texas Tech was graded a C despite beating Abilene Christian 33-10. Its defence did not concede a touchdown, but the offence settled for too many field goals and failed to sustain momentum.
Oregon was the outlier among highly rated contenders, edging Boise State 34-27 after entering as a 24-point favourite. Ohio State and Georgia, by contrast, won their opening games by a combined 119-9.
CBS Sports also gave Miami an A- for its 45-6 win over Stanford. Darian Mensah threw for 401 yards and five touchdowns, while Malachi Toney recorded a reported school single-game receiving record with 234 yards.
