London Spirit’s ambitions for a fresh start in The Hundred 2026 were thwarted on Thursday as the club suffered a double defeat against Manchester Super Giants at Lord’s. The result marks the fifth time in six seasons that the men’s team has begun its campaign with a loss, underscoring a persistent struggle despite significant changes to the club’s leadership and playing roster.
In the women’s fixture, Spirit’s hopes were extinguished early. Despite Grace Harris striking the first delivery for four, the team collapsed to 23 for four during the powerplay. They were eventually bowled out for 80 in 91 balls. Manchester Super Giants chased the target with ease, requiring only 59 deliveries to secure a seven-wicket victory, with Paige Scholfield finishing the chase with successive boundaries.
The men’s match provided a tighter contest, though the outcome remained the same. Tim Seifert anchored Manchester’s innings with 67 runs off 45 balls, helping the visitors reach 138 for nine. London Spirit’s chase began poorly with James Rew departing for a two-ball duck, but captain Liam Livingstone rebuilt the innings with a crucial 68-run partnership with Dewald Brevis.
Livingstone’s all-round performance was the standout feature of the evening. He scored 69 runs off 40 balls, including five sixes, and took two wickets for 14 runs with the ball. His efforts earned him the Match Hero award, yet they were not enough to overcome a late surge from Manchester’s bowlers. Manchester held their nerve in the final overs to win by seven runs, leaving Spirit on 131 for six. The men’s match attracted an attendance of 23,847 spectators and featured an interlude performance by rapper Tinie Tempah.
