Lions face depth uncertainty as Pacheco’s MCL sprain tests roster strategy
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirms Isiah Pacheco’s medial collateral ligament sprain, casting doubt on the team’s pre-planned backfield rotation despite expectations for his return by Week 1.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirmed that backup running back Isiah Pacheco has sustained a sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL), introducing a variable into the club’s preseason planning. The 27-year-old, who joined the Lions on a one-year, $1.81 million contract, is currently expected to recover in time for the 2026 NFL season opener against the New Orleans Saints on September 13.
The injury disrupts the Lions’ established depth chart structure. Pacheco was signed specifically to provide rotational support behind starter Jahmyr Gibbs, a move made after the team traded David Montgomery to the Houston Texans. With Gibbs projected to handle the majority of the workload, Pacheco’s role was primarily to offer relief and maintain offensive momentum during extended drives.
Campbell indicated that the team will utilise the remainder of the preseason to assess alternative running backs. Options under evaluation include Raheem Blackshear and Kye Robichaux, with the coaching staff determining whether to rely on existing depth or pursue additional acquisitions if Pacheco’s recovery timeline extends beyond the Week 1 target.
Pacheco’s arrival in Detroit followed a fractured fibula that ended his 2024 season with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he was originally selected in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. His previous tenure in Kansas City saw significant production, including 935 rushing yards and nine total touchdowns in 2023, before the injury-shortened campaign limited his availability.
The Lions’ current situation highlights the fragility of roster construction in the NFL. If Pacheco is not medically cleared for the Saints matchup, the team must decide between activating players such as Jacob Saylers, Jabari Small, and Sione Vaki or seeking external reinforcements. The final determination of readiness will be made during the ongoing preseason evaluations.
