Liam Farrell to retire after 2026 Super League season
The Wigan Warriors captain is uncertain whether he will play again because of an ongoing neck issue before moving into the club’s performance setup.
Wigan Warriors captain Liam Farrell says he will retire at the end of the 2026 Super League season, concluding a 17-season professional career spent entirely with the club.
Farrell, 36, has not played since June because of an ongoing neck issue. With potentially three matches remaining for Wigan, including a possible Super League Grand Final appearance, he must consult a specialist before deciding whether he can return.
The captain said he would like to lead Wigan out in a Grand Final, but acknowledged that his career may not end with another appearance. His return remains uncertain and depends on specialist advice.
Farrell has captained Wigan since 2023, making 428 appearances and scoring 151 tries. He has won six Super League titles, five Challenge Cups and two World Club Challenges, while earning 12 England caps.
After retiring as a player, Farrell plans to move into Wigan’s performance department. He said he obtained relevant qualifications several years ago and had been preparing for the transition while continuing his playing career.
