Leeds United secure Premier League survival with victory over Burnley
While survival is mathematically probable, the club must still play three remaining games to officially seal their top-flight status for the next season
Leeds United have defeated Burnley 3-1 to reach 43 points, a tally that has never resulted in relegation in a 38-game Premier League season. The victory moves the Yorkshire club to 14th place and places them nine points clear of 18th-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who occupy the final relegation spot. Although the win moves Leeds to a position where survival is mathematically highly probable, the club has not yet officially secured their top-flight status for the next season and must still play three remaining games.
The match saw Leeds climb to 14th in the table, edging out Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, and West Ham, all of whom have a game in hand on Daniel Farke's side. This positioning places Leeds above these rivals as the bottom two teams, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley, are confirmed for relegation. The result underscores the competitive nature of the league's lower mid-table, where points gained can significantly alter the landscape for teams fighting to avoid the drop zone.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin secured the third goal for Leeds just four minutes into the second half, finding himself in a crowded penalty box to prod the ball home after Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dubravka could only parry a long-range effort from Ao Tanaka. Burnley managed a consolation goal through Loum Tchaouna, but the result leaves them and Wolves as the only sides confirmed to drop to the Championship this term. The Whites' victory over Burnley meant Newcastle slipped down to 15th, having themselves gone on a run of four successive losses.
Leeds manager Daniel Farke guided his team to this decisive step toward retaining their Premier League status. The 49-year-old is more likely to point to a 3-2 defeat by Manchester City in late November as the moment his side's fortunes changed, and the numbers back it up. After goals from Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol put City 2-0 up inside 25 minutes, Leeds were left fearing the worst until Farke made an almighty roll of the dice.
Farke implemented a tactical switch from a 4-3-3 to a 3-5-2 formation during the Manchester City game, which is credited with stabilising the team's fortunes. This tactical change allowed Leeds an extra man in midfield and, crucially, offered extra support to summer signing Calvert-Lewin in attack. Although Leeds saw a point snatched from their grasp when Foden scored a stoppage-time winner, the performance and a new tactical blueprint offered both the club and Farke a road to redemption.
Since the tactical switch, Leeds have lost only four out of a possible 19 league games, the ninth-best record in the division. Consequently, Farke is on course to lead a team to Premier League survival for the first time in his career after failing to do so during his time in charge of Norwich. The victory over Burnley means Leeds can now focus on the final three fixtures to officially seal their place in the top flight.
Spurs, who travel to Aston Villa on Sunday, can only achieve a maximum tally of 46 points, while Leeds could mathematically secure their place in the top flight next term with a victory at Tottenham on 11 May. The data experts say Spurs are favourites to go down with a 59.8% chance, with West Ham rated at 38% to join Burnley and Wolves in the Championship next season.
