Leeds United in talks with Manchester City over James Trafford transfer
Discussions are underway between the two clubs as Leeds look to fill the goalkeeping void left by Illan Meslier’s move to Arsenal.
Leeds United have initiated formal discussions with Manchester City regarding a potential transfer for goalkeeper James Trafford. The move follows the club’s identification of Trafford as a primary domestic target after a bid for Parma’s Zion Suzuki failed to meet the Italian club’s requirements.
The pursuit of a new shot-stopper became a priority for Leeds United following the departure of Illan Meslier to Arsenal on a free transfer. The exit of Meslier, combined with the recent departure of Karl Darlow, has significantly depleted the club’s goalkeeping options, leaving them with limited alternatives in Lucas Perri and Alex Cairns.
Trafford, a Manchester City academy graduate, returned to his boyhood club last summer after a successful loan spell at Burnley where he made 73 appearances. City activated a buy-back option for the Englishman for a fee of £27 million plus add-ons, intending for him to serve as a replacement for the departed Ederson.
However, Trafford’s role was reduced after City signed Gianluigi Donnarumma before the previous transfer window closed. Despite this, Trafford started 17 games last season, recording eight clean sheets and 39 saves. He also contributed to City’s success by winning the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup during the campaign.
It remains unclear what valuation Manchester City has placed on Trafford, nor is the outcome of the ongoing negotiations certain. Newcastle United were previously linked with a move for the goalkeeper but have opted to pursue other targets. Should Trafford depart the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City would be left with only Marcus Bettinelli as a back-up to Donnarumma.
