Leeds United agree £8.5m fee for Nico Elvedi as medical looms

Leeds United have reached an agreement with Borussia Monchengladbach for the transfer of Swiss defender Nico Elvedi, with the fee structured at an initial £6.8 million and up to £1.7 million in potential add-ons. The 29-year-old is scheduled to travel to England on Monday to undergo a medical, marking the next step in a move that would conclude his eleven-year tenure at the German club.
The versatile defender brings significant experience to the Elland Road squad, having made 364 appearances for Monchengladbach, including seventeen in the Champions League. Elvedi is also a seasoned international, holding 73 caps for Switzerland and featuring in the national squad at this summer’s World Cup.
Despite the agreement on fees, Leeds manager Daniel Farke maintained a measured stance regarding the finalisation of the deal. Speaking after a pre-season victory over Augsburg, Farke emphasised that the transaction remains contingent on successful medical checks and the completion of all necessary paperwork.
"I've been working in football long enough to know everything is only final once the medical checks are completed and all the paperwork is signed," Farke stated. He noted that he typically refrains from discussing new players until they are officially announced, citing previous instances where similar situations had not resulted in completed transfers.
However, Farke indicated that the club anticipates the process to conclude within the next 48 hours. He admitted that while he does not wish to speculate prematurely, the expectation is that the deal will be settled shortly. The official announcement remains subject to these final administrative processes.
The acquisition of Elvedi is also linked to a potential movement within the Leeds squad, with fringe defender Sebastiaan Bornauw expected to join Hamburg on an initial loan deal that includes an option to buy. This structural adjustment appears to be a component of the broader transfer strategy surrounding Elvedi’s arrival.
Leeds United are now preparing to commence their Premier League campaign, with their opening fixture scheduled for next Saturday away at Nottingham Forest. The club will be keen to have the new signing fully registered and integrated before the season begins.
