Leeds Rhinos seize Super League lead with dramatic comeback against Wakefield

Leeds Rhinos have moved four points clear at the summit of the Betfred Super League table following a tense 24-22 victory over Wakefield Trinity. The result, secured at DIY Kitchens Stadium, places the Rhinos in a commanding position to secure the League Leaders' Shield with five games remaining in the regular season.

Wakefield Trinity established an early and commanding advantage, building a 16-0 lead through tries from Isaiah Vagana, Caius Faatili, Jayden Myers, and Jack Sinfield. All four conversions were successfully executed by Sinfield, who also wrestled the ball over the line in the second half to extend his side’s lead. The hosts appeared to be in control until Leeds began to chip away at the deficit.

Leeds showed resilience after Brodie Croft scored his 25th Super League try of the campaign to provide initial hope. The momentum shifted significantly in the second half, driven by a strong performance from Cam Smith off the bench. Smith, who is set to join Wakefield next season, powered through the defence to help close the gap, while Wakefield’s defence was tested by crucial last-ditch tackles from Cam Scott and Caleb Hamlin-Uele.

With three minutes remaining, Leeds were trailing 22-10. Chris Hankinson pounced on a grubber-kick from Jake Connor to level the scores at 22-22. Connor, last year’s Man of Steel, then produced a nerveless conversion from the left flank to give Leeds the lead. Earlier in the comeback phase, James McDonnell had also scored to narrow the gap, with Connor adding the subsequent conversion.

Connor kicked four goals in total for Leeds, sealing the victory and handing the Rhinos a major step towards a top-two finish. The win demonstrates Leeds’ capacity to withstand pressure and capitalize on late opportunities, leaving them four points ahead of their nearest rivals as the season enters its final stretch.
