LeBron James made his first public appearance since confirming his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers, yet he stopped short of identifying his next NBA destination. The 41-year-old free agent addressed a crowd of approximately 5,000 people at the Javits Center in New York for a live taping of his "Mind the Game" podcast at Fanatics Fest, the annual sports lifestyle festival.
During the event, Indiana Pacers player Tyrese Haliburton, who served as guest co-host, attempted to elicit details regarding James’ decision. Haliburton asked if a choice remained to be made, but James reiterated that revealing his next team was not on the agenda. Haliburton acknowledged the boundary, noting he had previously texted James an invitation to join the Pacers a month prior, receiving only laughing and crying emojis in response before ceasing his pursuit.
Sources indicate that several franchises remain in active pursuit of the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. According to reports, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, and Golden State Warriors are among the teams vying for James’ signature. His agent and Klutch Sports CEO, Rich Paul, informed the Lakers of his departure more than two weeks ago, ending an eight-year stint with the franchise.
James offered his first extensive comments on his time with the Lakers, expressing gratitude to the Buss family, general manager Rob Pelinka, coaches, and teammates. He described the period as an "unbelievable ride" and acknowledged the historical significance of the organisation. Former Lakers coach JJ Redick, who co-hosts the podcast, attended the event with his sons, Kai and Knox.
While James did not provide specific details on his future club, he hinted at the longevity of his career, suggesting he is considering playing a 24th season, and possibly a 25th. He concluded his remarks by telling fans that wherever he lands in the fall, the experience will be "pretty fun" and that he intends to continue performing at his established standard.
