LeBron James and PGA Tour announce foundation invitational for aspiring golfers
The partnership establishes a new tournament at Firestone Country Club, linking the LeBron James Family Foundation with the PGA Tour’s collegiate development pathways.
The PGA Tour and LeBron James have formalised a partnership to launch the LeBron James Family Foundation Invitational, a new golf event designed to support aspiring professional players. The tournament is scheduled to debut on 6 and 7 July 2027 at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, a venue with a history as a longtime stop on the PGA Tour schedule.
The event structure combines a competitive field of professionals, amateurs, and celebrities with off-course mentorship programmes. These initiatives are designed to connect students from James’ I Promise School with professional golfers participating in the PGA Tour’s Pathway to Progression Pro-Bound Five programme.
The Pro-Bound Five initiative, established by the PGA Tour in 2023, grants APGA Tour membership to the top five players in the APGA Collegiate rankings at the end of each year. By integrating this cohort into the invitational, the partnership aims to provide additional playing opportunities for these emerging athletes.
James, who is 41, took up golf last year while residing in Los Angeles. He has since launched a YouTube channel to document his progress as a new golfer, aiming to encourage young people to engage with the sport. In a statement, James described golf as a passion that opens doors and builds relationships, noting that the partnership allows his foundation to introduce I Promise students to the game at a young age.
The collaboration also serves as a strategic investment for the LeBron James Family Foundation, which continues to support the city of Akron. James emphasised the importance of supporting talented athletes chasing their dreams while continuing to invest in his hometown.
While James recently signed a two-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, the endpoint of his basketball career remains uncertain. His agent, Rich Paul, has suggested he may play between one and four additional seasons. This golf initiative signals a significant institutional commitment to the sport, positioning it as a major component of James’ post-basketball trajectory.
