Lebanon casualty toll rises to 31 as Israeli ground offensive deepens
The death toll from Israeli military operations in Lebanon has reached at least 31, with 40 others wounded, marking one of the heaviest bombardments since the US-brokered truce began in April.

Israeli military operations across southern and eastern Lebanon escalated significantly on Tuesday, resulting in at least 31 deaths and 40 injuries, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. The casualties include at least four children and three women. This escalation represents one of the heaviest bombardments since a US-brokered ceasefire was established on 8 April 2026, ending a three-month-long conflict.
The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) stated that the operation targeted more than 100 Hezbollah infrastructure sites and fighters. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that military forces are taking control of strategic areas in Lebanon. Reports indicate that Israeli ground forces are pushing deeper into Lebanese territory, raising fears of a wider offensive as residents flee the escalating assault.
Dozens of displacement orders were issued for towns and villages in the south and east, prompting panic and mass flight among the local population. Rescue teams have struggled to reach upper floors in heavily damaged areas, suggesting the exact number of casualties may rise as operations continue. The extent of the ground offensive remains unclear, with uncertainty surrounding whether the movement constitutes a full-scale invasion or limited tactical manoeuvres.
Concurrently, diplomatic efforts remain fragile as Iranian officials condemned recent US strikes on southern Iran as “blatant violations” of the ceasefire. US forces carried out attacks on missile sites and vessels in southern Iran on Monday, citing self-defence against threats from Iranian forces. These strikes occurred as Iranian negotiators arrived in Doha for high-stakes talks aimed at ending the conflict.
Regional tensions are further heightened by the imposition of sanctions on Cuba’s intelligence agency and senior officials by the US Treasury. This follows reports that Havana acquired over 300 military drones from Russia and Iran. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel warned of a “bloodbath” if the US attacks, while Israel reported killing a new Hamas military commander in a strike in Gaza City during the ceasefire period.
