Lakers star Luka Doncic rebuts media speculation on injury recovery following playoff exit
The Los Angeles Lakers centre stated that previous claims regarding his medical clearance were inaccurate as he had not cleared for full-contact workouts

Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic has publicly challenged NBA media speculation concerning his injury recovery status following his team's elimination from the 2026 Western Conference Semifinals. Speaking after the Lakers suffered a 115-110 defeat in Game 4 at Crypto.com Arena, Doncic denied suggestions that he was close to returning to the court, asserting that previous reports regarding his progress were inaccurate.
The centre, who missed the entire series due to a Grade 2 left hamstring strain sustained on 2 April, stated that reporters had not seen his MRIs and were unaware of his actual medical clearance. He specifically addressed comments made by ESPN insider Shams Charania, who had reported prior to the series that Doncic was following a slow recovery path and was not undertaking full-contact workouts.
Despite undergoing platelet-rich plasma therapy in Spain and progressing with light running and shooting drills, Doncic confirmed he never received clearance for full-speed basketball activities. The Lakers medical staff had previously provided an eight-week recovery timeline following the injury, a decision influenced by the fact that this marked the second time Doncic damaged the same hamstring during the 2025-26 season.
This injury forced Doncic to miss the entire postseason while the Oklahoma City Thunder completed a dominant 4-0 series sweep to advance to the Western Conference Finals. The Lakers struggled significantly without their leading scorer, ending their campaign as the defending champions led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander moved forward in the competition.
Doncic expressed frustration that the media narrative did not align with the reality of his rehabilitation, noting that while some wanted him back, he was not close to clearing for game action. He indicated that recovery efforts would continue into the offseason, though a specific timeline for his return to the court remains unknown at this stage.
