Speculation regarding the operational direction of the Los Angeles Lakers has intensified following the reported agreement for Josh Kushner and Bob Iger to purchase a majority share of the franchise from Mark Walter. The transaction, valued at $12.5 billion, marks a significant leadership transition for the NBA institution, which Walter had acquired for $10 billion in October 2025.
As questions arise concerning the new ownership group’s strategy, attention has turned to retired NBA star Chris Paul. ESPN reporter Ramona Shelburne identified Paul as a key figure to monitor, noting his extensive experience and a long-standing personal friendship with Iger. Paul recently concluded a 21-season career widely regarded as one of the premier point guard tenures in league history.
Khobi Price, writing for the California Post, reported that NBA front office sources have floated the idea of Paul serving in a consultant capacity. One anonymous front office worker described the 12-time All-Star as a potential resource for the organisation, suggesting he could advise staff on high-level game understanding. The source emphasised that Paul’s fit would depend on his commitment and willingness to listen to the organisation’s existing structure.
Further speculation from another anonymous front office employee suggested Paul could transition into a coaching role. Citing his accolades and history of leadership on the floor and in the locker room, the source argued that his deep comprehension of the game could translate effectively to coaching. The worker noted that both front office and coaching positions appeared viable for Paul’s future trajectory.
The potential involvement of Paul with the Lakers carries historical weight. In December 2011, the franchise attempted to acquire Paul from the New Orleans Pelicans, but the trade was blocked by then-Commissioner David Stern, who was acting owner of the Charlotte Hornets. Paul was subsequently traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, where he helped revitalise the team’s competitiveness.
