Lakers Linked to Speculative Three-Team Trade for Kuminga and Thompson

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly navigating a complex potential three-team trade that would see them acquire former Golden State Warriors players Jonathan Kuminga and Klay Thompson. The proposal, which aims to bolster the roster following the team’s recent playoff exit, involves sending Dalton Knecht, Bronny James, and additional assets to other franchises.
The trade scenario was outlined by Heavy.com’s Sai Mohan, who detailed a structure where the Lakers receive Kuminga and Thompson. In exchange, the Dallas Mavericks would acquire Knecht, Jaden Hardy, Jake LaRavia, James, and several second-round draft picks. The Atlanta Hawks would reportedly receive Jarred Vanderbilt and a first-round pick swap from Los Angeles.
Interest in Kuminga has been persistent for the Lakers, with NBA reporter Evan Sidery noting that the forward has rejected minimum-salary offers from other teams, including the Sacramento Kings and Minnesota Timberwolves. Sidery indicated that the Lakers remain the favourites to acquire Kuminga, who has shut down one-year prove-it deals at the veteran’s minimum.
Regarding Thompson, The Athletic’s Christian Clark reported that the four-time NBA champion is open to returning to Los Angeles, where he owns a home and spent part of his childhood. While the Miami Heat have also been mentioned as a potential destination, the report suggests Thompson would welcome a return to the city.
The proposed move would see the Lakers part with several contracts they have reportedly sought to move throughout the summer. Kuminga and Thompson have combined for five NBA championships and $346 million in career earnings. The deal remains speculative, with no confirmation from the NBA or the teams involved regarding active negotiations with the Mavericks or Hawks.
This potential transaction occurs against the backdrop of a significant ownership change, with Josh Kushner and Bob Iger acquiring the franchise from Mark Walter for $12.5 billion less than 14 months ago. The new principals are now facing immediate pressure to reshape the roster for a championship run.
