Death toll rises to 84 from capsized ferry in Zimbabwe
Overloaded vessel capsizes near Zambian border during heavy winds, prompting presidential condemnation and ongoing search operations.

Zimbabwe’s national police service has confirmed that the death toll from a capsized passenger ferry on Lake Kariba has risen to at least 84. In a statement posted on X on Sunday, authorities reported the recovery of four additional bodies, noting that search and recovery operations remain active. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, is believed to be the deadliest maritime disaster in the country’s history.

The vessel overturned during heavy winds while travelling near the Zambian border. According to authorities, the ferry was en route from the town of Kariba to rural and fishing communities in the country’s northwest. While officials have not confirmed the exact number of passengers on board, they stated the vessel was carrying as many as 153 people, significantly exceeding its certified capacity of 90.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa responded to the tragedy on Tuesday, describing the event as tragic and highlighting serious deficiencies in the nation’s transport infrastructure. His comments underscore the urgent need for systemic reforms, as the disaster has drawn attention to the precarious state of waterborne transport in the region.

Water travel remains a critical mode of transport in northern Zimbabwe due to inadequate infrastructure, including limited public transport options and poorly maintained roads. The reliance on such vessels for connecting remote communities has long been a point of concern, with the current incident serving as a stark illustration of the risks involved.

Local media footage circulating online shows hundreds of people waiting outside a local hospital to identify victims. Among the deceased, at least 18 children have been confirmed, adding to the scale of the human toll. As search efforts continue, the final death toll is expected to rise, with authorities working to verify the precise number of those on board.
