LA Galaxy’s search for tactical stability was interrupted by a 3-1 home defeat to St. Louis City SC on Wednesday night, extending their losing streak to two matches. The result leaves the club with a record of 5-5-7, raising concerns about their standing in the postseason picture as they navigate a depleted squad.
St. Louis City SC seized control in the final six minutes of the first half, with Lukas MacNaughton heading in a goal in the 42nd minute and Marcel Harcel adding a second four minutes later. Despite controlling the majority of possession and limiting St. Louis touches in the box during the earlier stages, the Galaxy’s defensive lapse proved costly. Head coach Greg Vanney expressed frustration at the timing of the conceding goals, noting that his side had the better of the play until the late surge.
The situation deteriorated further in the second half when defender Carlos Garcés was sent off in the 49th minute. Garcés received a second yellow card for fouls not directed towards the ball, reducing the Galaxy to ten men. Vanney highlighted the disciplinary issues as a critical vulnerability, stating that such errors lead to suspensions and create structural weaknesses within the group.
Compounding the defensive woes, forward Marco Reus sustained a leg injury early in the second half and was substituted. Vanney provided no update on Reus’ status, though the player was seen limping before leaving the pitch. St. Louis capitalised on the numerical advantage, with Simon Becher chipping goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski in the 68th minute to secure a comfortable lead.
In the closing stages, the Galaxy showed renewed intensity. Harbor Miller, who has transitioned to a wing position, initiated an attack that led to Troy Elgersma scoring in the 86th minute. The goal marked Elgersma’s first career strike for the club in his second MLS appearance. The late effort offered a minor positive for a side that has conceded at least three goals in each of their last two matches following the post-World Cup break.
The team now prepares for a road match against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday. With the squad dealing with injuries and a recent signing of Kyogo Furuhashi from Birmingham City, the focus remains on maintaining urgency and discipline to salvage points from the remaining fixtures.
