Kyiv region strikes kill three, including child, as Moscow escalates ballistic campaign

Russian missile strikes targeted the Brovary district, located northeast of Kyiv, on Saturday, killing three people including a child and wounding three others. The attacks caused significant damage to residential properties, vehicles, and a warehouse, prompting an air raid alert in the capital due to the threat of incoming ballistic missiles.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the regional military administration, confirmed the casualties and the extent of the damage on Telegram. He reported that falling debris from the strikes damaged houses and vehicles, while also igniting a fire in a non-residential building. Ukraine's state emergency service corroborated the destruction, noting that the attack in the village of Pukhivka destroyed a two-storey house and two cars, sparking a fire in a warehouse.
The escalation in hostilities coincides with a period of faltering mediation talks between Russia and Ukraine. Moscow has significantly increased the frequency of attacks on the Ukrainian capital in recent months, typically employing short, intense salvos of hard-to-intercept ballistic missiles. This tactical shift follows recent Ukrainian military actions, including strikes on oil refineries inside Russia and Moscow-linked vessels in the Black Sea, which were aimed at limiting Russian oil revenues used to finance the war.
An AFP reporter in Kyiv reported hearing approximately a dozen explosions during the incident. As Ukraine's air force warned of the threat of ballistic weapon use from the north, Kyiv's military administration declared an air raid alert, instructing residents to take shelter. The administration also reported that four people were wounded in separate overnight attacks within the city itself.
The violence comes just days after a previous attack across Ukraine killed 21 people. Amidst the renewed bombardment, President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned of critical shortages of air defence interceptors, highlighting the strain on Ukraine's defensive capabilities as the conflict intensifies.
