While officials caution that a new stadium is not yet confirmed, the incoming ownership of the Los Angeles Angels has reignited discussions about replacing the team's aging venue in Anaheim.
Billionaire Stan Kroenke has purchased the Los Angeles Angels from Arte Moreno, adding the Major League Baseball franchise to the extensive portfolio of Kroenke Sports and Entertainment. The ownership change is not expected to be official until next year, but the acquisition has already prompted speculation regarding the construction of a new stadium to replace the team's current aging venue.
The potential for a new ballpark gained traction after a Forbes article referenced the project, though the mention was subsequently removed. A spokesperson for Kroenke stated that the Angels were not ready to move forward on the project at this time, although they might in the future. This retraction has left the status of the development in a state of uncertainty, with local officials describing current discussions as speculative.
Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken acknowledged the attention on the city but noted that the local government does not yet have inside information. "There is a lot of potential for the stadium site, but anything at this point is speculative," Aitken said. She emphasised that the city needs to let the proposed team sale play out before engaging in further discussions.
The process for developing a new stadium is bound by California’s Surplus Land Act, a legal framework that dictates how public land can be used. Aitken stated that the city has been clear about the need to follow this law before any discussions around the future of the site can proceed. This regulatory hurdle adds a layer of complexity to what is already an evolving situation.
Despite the lack of a confirmed timeline, optimism is high among players and fans. Mike Trout, who has spent his entire 16-season career with the Angels, expressed that he was "super excited for the change." He noted that the fan reaction and the overall vibe indicated a need for a fresh start and a return to a winning culture, a sentiment shared by many in Orange County.
Kroenke brings a track record of success and stadium development to the franchise. As chairman of Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, he owns the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Arsenal FC, and Colorado Rapids. He previously led the financing and construction of SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, a project that has hosted major events including the 2026 World Cup.
