Kofu City under Level 4 Heavy Rain Warning as Flooding Risks Escalate
The Kofu Regional Meteorological Observatory has declared a Level 4 Heavy Rain Warning for Kofu City, citing imminent threats of river overflows and widespread inundation in low-lying districts.

The Kofu Regional Meteorological Observatory issued a Level 4 Heavy Rain Warning for Kofu City in Yamanashi Prefecture at 10:51 pm on July 25. This designation represents the highest tier in Japan’s disaster prevention framework, indicating that conditions are consistent with a once-in-50-year catastrophic event. The observatory has emphasised that strict vigilance is required due to the extremely high probability of flooding in low-lying areas and significant risk of river overflows.
Under the current alert status, the Kofu Regional Meteorological Observatory is actively monitoring evacuation information being released by local municipal authorities. While the meteorological body confirms the severity of the weather conditions, specific details regarding the implementation of evacuation orders for residents remain contingent on data being gathered from local government sources.
The issuance of this warning follows a period of heightened disaster risk across Japan earlier in the year. On June 3, 2026, similar high-level alerts were deployed in other regions, including a Level 4 flood danger warning for the Meguro River in Tokyo and predictions for line-shaped precipitation bands affecting southern Tokushima and Wakayama prefectures. These events highlight a broader pattern of severe weather systems impacting multiple jurisdictions within a short timeframe.
A Level 4 warning necessitates immediate action from the public and local governance structures. It signals that a major disaster is occurring or is imminent, requiring residents to prioritise safety and adhere to instructions from local officials. The coordination between the Japan Meteorological Agency and local governments is critical during such periods to ensure that evacuation data is accurately interpreted and disseminated.
As of the latest reporting, the focus remains on tracking the progression of the heavy rain and confirming the status of emergency measures in Kofu City. Authorities continue to assess the evolving situation, with the primary objective of mitigating damage from potential inundation and ensuring public safety amidst the severe weather conditions.
