Vegas overcomes 2-0 deficit to take Game 1

The Vegas Golden Knights have taken a 1-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Final, defeating the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 in Game 1 at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. The victory extends Vegas’ playoff winning streak to seven games, following a second-round series against the Anaheim Ducks and a four-game sweep of the Presidents' Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche.

Carolina entered the best-of-seven series as money-line favourites with a 12-1 record in the postseason. They established an early 2-0 lead after the first period, with Nikolaj Ehlers scoring the game’s first two goals. The Hurricanes held home-ice advantage, hosting Games 1, 2, 5, and 7 of the series.

Vegas mounted a comeback in the third period, with Tomas Hertl scoring the go-ahead goal 16:36 into the frame. Hertl’s goal, his fourth of the postseason, was assisted by Colton Sissons and Shea Theodore. Other scorers for the Golden Knights included Shea Theodore, Ivan Barbashev, William Karlsson, and Brett Howden.

Carolina responded late in the game, with Shayne Gostisbehere tying the score with under nine minutes remaining in regulation. Jordan Staal also scored for the Hurricanes, marking his first playoff goal since 2009 and breaking the record held by his brother, Eric Staal, for the longest gap between Stanley Cup Final goals.

The result handed Carolina just its second loss of the entire postseason. Vegas coach Jon Cooper noted the team’s need to adjust to the series pace, while Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour acknowledged the shift in momentum. Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Thursday in Raleigh.
