New York defeats Cleveland in overtime after trailing by 22 points, marking a stark contrast to last year’s playoff collapse

The New York Knicks have secured a commanding 1-0 lead in the 2026 Eastern Conference Finals after defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers 115-104 in overtime. The victory marks a significant institutional turnaround for the franchise, which overcame a 22-point deficit with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to extend its winning streak to eight consecutive games. The win places New York three victories away from the NBA Finals, their first appearance since 1999.

The match highlighted a decisive divergence from the 2025 Eastern Conference Finals, where the Knicks blew a 14-point lead against the Indiana Pacers, a loss that ultimately led to the dismissal of former coach Tom Thibodeau. In contrast, the current administration under Mike Brown implemented a critical tactical adjustment late in the fourth quarter. Brown substituted Josh Hart for Landry Shamet to deploy a five-out lineup, a move that revitalised the offence and allowed the Knicks to outscore Cleveland 44-11 during the comeback run.

Cleveland had established a commanding 22-point lead, a margin that had only been overturned four times in 751 prior Conference Finals Game 1 instances in league history. The Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell led all scorers with 29 points, but the team could not contain the Knicks’ renewed defensive scheme. The adjustment forced Cleveland to guard Hart, who had previously struggled from three-point range, while Jalen Brunson exploited mismatches against James Harden.

The game concluded in dramatic fashion after Shamet hit a tying three-pointer with 45 seconds left in regulation. In overtime, the Knicks maintained their composure as Sam Merrill missed a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer. The shot rimmed out after broadcaster Mike Breen began to call the play, sealing the victory for New York and highlighting the internal cohesion that has replaced the dysfunction of the previous season.

The 2026 NBA Playoffs have also etched a new chapter in league history, marking the first time that both the Eastern and Western Conference Finals Game 1 matches have gone to overtime. The Knicks’ victory extends their series lead against the Cavaliers, while the San Antonio Spurs hold a 1-0 lead in the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Knicks now face a heavily favoured Western Conference champion in their pursuit of the title.
