The New York Knicks will face the San Antonio Spurs in the 2026 NBA Finals, marking the Knicks' first appearance in the championship series since 1999. The first game is scheduled for Wednesday at 8:30 ET, to be broadcast on ABC, and will be held in San Antonio. The Spurs secured their Finals berth by defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder in a seven-game Western Conference final series, ending with a Game 7 victory on the Monday prior to the Finals. The Knicks advanced to the Finals after completing an 11-game winning streak in the postseason, having swept Philadelphia and defeated Cleveland in the Eastern Conference finals.
Knicks players, including guard Deuce McBride and forward Josh Hart, have publicly dismissed the significance of their NBA Cup victory over the Spurs earlier in the season, noting that the in-season tournament games do not count towards standings or statistics. McBride described the Spurs as a "special team" with a great organisation and young talent, while Hart noted that the earlier result holds no equivalent value to the championship atmosphere. The Knicks passed on raising a banner for the NBA Cup win, viewing it as distinct from the current high-stakes matchup.
The Knicks are concerned about maintaining playing rhythm after a significant layoff; they played only 10 games in a 35-day span leading up to the Finals, following a week-long break after sweeping Philadelphia. Karl-Anthony Towns highlighted the team's previous struggle with rust during a layoff against Cleveland, where they shot 4 for 23 from three-point range in the first three quarters before rallying to win in overtime. Towns stated the team is focused on improving upon that performance, having outscored opponents by 262 points during their 11-game winning streak.
The Spurs' young core, featuring Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper, has no prior collective playoff experience. Wembanyama averaged 41 points and 24 rebounds in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals against Oklahoma City. The matchup echoes the 1999 Finals, where the Spurs defeated the Knicks to end New York’s title drought, which dates back to 1973.
Head coach Mike Brown has personal ties to San Antonio, having served as an assistant to Gregg Popovich during the Spurs' 1999 title run and losing as a head coach when the Spurs swept Cleveland in 2007. Brown, who has family still living in San Antonio, acknowledged his appreciation for the people and journey associated with the city but emphasised that the competitive objective remains to defeat the opposing team.
