Klopp issues ultimatum to German media ahead of national team appointment

Jurgen Klopp has issued a stark warning to the press, stating he is prepared to resign as Germany’s head coach if journalists intrude upon his family’s privacy. The 59-year-old articulated this condition during his first official press conference, marking the formal commencement of his reign as the national team manager.

Klopp, who was appointed to a four-year contract running until the 2030 World Cup, replaced Julian Nagelsmann after the latter stepped down following Germany’s elimination from the 2026 tournament. The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed the appointment on Friday, ending weeks of speculation surrounding the former Liverpool manager’s next career move.

Speaking candidly about the pressures of international management, Klopp stated, “If you behave badly and don't leave my family in peace then I'll be gone, I'll just turn away.” He acknowledged that while other nations may subject their coaches to harsher treatment, he remains firm on the issue, adding, “I love this job but I am always ready to call it quits if need be.”

The appointment represents what Klopp described as the “pinnacle, the absolutely high point of my footballing career.” He indicated that this role is likely his final position in management, having previously concluded his nine-year tenure at Liverpool in the summer of 2024 after citing a need to rest. He noted that he does not expect to have a career after this national team stint.

Klopp’s first match in charge is scheduled for 24 September against the Netherlands in the Nations League. He admitted that while he had anticipated the magnitude of the role, the reality of being the national team head coach was only now fully dawning on him, describing the process as feeling “almost like a movie happening to myself.”
