Klay Thompson expected to join Miami Heat after Dallas Mavericks buyout

Klay Thompson is expected to sign with the Miami Heat after clearing waivers following a contract buyout with the Dallas Mavericks, according to a report from ESPN. The move marks the third organisation in Thompson’s professional career, concluding a two-season stint in Dallas and following an 11-year tenure with the Golden State Warriors.

The signing is contingent on the completion of the waiver process. Once cleared, Thompson will join the Heat’s rotation under head coach Erik Spoelstra. His arrival is seen as a strategic addition to a squad that already features Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, a frontcourt described as one of the best in the Eastern Conference.

Thompson’s departure from Dallas coincides with a significant rebuilding phase for the Mavericks. The organisation has shifted its focus to young star Cooper Flagg after the trade of Luka Doncic to the Lakers and ongoing injury issues involving Kyrie Irving. This restructuring has created space for veteran players to seek new opportunities elsewhere.

During his two seasons with the Mavericks, Thompson averaged 12.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. He shot 40.3 per cent from the field and 38.7 per cent from beyond the arc on 7.7 attempts per contest. His presence in Miami is expected to provide much-needed shooting and floor spacing for the Heat’s offensive system.

The report was first broken by Shams Charania of ESPN on Friday, citing sources familiar with the negotiations. The transaction follows Thompson’s agreement to a buyout late in the offseason, a move that facilitated his transition to South Beach.

Thompson’s career history includes four championships and five All-Star selections during his time with the Golden State Warriors. His experience at the highest level of the NBA positions him as a key contributor to the Heat’s current roster construction.
