KKR’s replacement gamble pays off as Dubey dismantles top order
Saurabh Dubey’s selection as an injury replacement for Kolkata Knight Riders has defied initial scepticism, delivering critical wickets against Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians after a two-and-a-half-year absence from competitive cricket.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ decision to appoint left-arm pacer Saurabh Dubey as an injury replacement has yielded immediate structural benefits for the franchise, despite significant external scepticism regarding his recent form. Dubey, who had not played competitive cricket for nearly two-and-a-half years, was selected over several senior domestic candidates including Navdeep Saini, KM Asif, Simarjeet Singh, Akash Madhwal, and Sandeep Warrier. The choice was made following trials held to identify replacements for Akash Deep and Harshit Rana, with Dubey ultimately edging out more experienced contenders based on his performance in practice sessions.
The Vidarbha player’s path to the squad involved a period of quiet integration, where he served as a net bowler and supported the team by carrying drinks and ferrying bats. His selection was formally announced by head coach Abhishek Nayar at a dinner table, a moment Dubey described as shifting from nervousness to excitement as captain Ajinkya Rahane and teammates offered congratulations. This internal endorsement was bolstered by extensive training under Nayar and former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn, who refined Dubey’s execution plans and fitness regimes during his tenure with Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians.
Dubey’s transition from the nets to the league stage began with a debut against Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he bowled 2.1 overs for 21 runs without taking a wicket in a six-wicket defeat. However, his subsequent performances against Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians demonstrated a marked improvement in tactical execution. Against Gujarat Titans, he dismissed Jos Buttler to finish with figures of 2.4-0-23-1, contributing to a 29-run victory that stabilised the team’s campaign.
The most significant impact came in a must-win match against Mumbai Indians, where Dubey’s ability to handle pressure was tested. He conceded just four runs in his opening over, utilising a mix of yorkers and hard lengths to trouble the opposition. In the following over, he removed Rohit Sharma for 15 runs before dismissing Suryakumar Yadav with a sharp delivery that crashed into the stumps. These dismissals highlighted the efficacy of the specific bowling plans discussed with the coaching staff, particularly the guidance provided by Dale Steyn and Nayar.
Dubey, who cited Indian legend Zaheer Khan as his primary inspiration and idol, acknowledged the weight of the IPL stage. He noted that while pressure is inevitable, the support structure within the KKR camp allowed him to focus on execution.
