Ketchup Entertainment Secures Theatrical Release for Coyote vs. Acme Amid SDCC Trailer Debut
San Diego Comic-Con unveiled final trailers for the Ketchup-backed Coyote vs. Acme and Sony Pictures’ Resident Evil reboot, marking significant shifts in distribution and creative direction for both franchises.
San Diego Comic-Con has served as the launchpad for the final trailer of Coyote vs. Acme and the full trailer for director Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil. The event also featured a screening of the first 18 minutes of the Resident Evil film for select attendees, highlighting the industry’s renewed focus on both legacy IP and original storytelling within established universes.
Coyote vs. Acme, a satirical legal drama based on a 1990 New Yorker piece by Ian Frazier, has undergone a significant distribution shift. After being shelved for years and treated as a tax write-off by Warner Bros., the film was acquired by Ketchup Entertainment, which has now secured a broad theatrical release. The film is scheduled to hit cinemas on 28 August 2026.
The plot centres on Wile E. Coyote suing ACME Inc. following decades of catastrophic equipment failures in his pursuit of the Road Runner. The cast features Will Forte as Kevin Avery, a billboard accident lawyer, and John Cena as Buddy Crane, the slick corporate counsel representing ACME. Supporting roles include Lana Condor, P.J. Byrne, and Luis Guzman, with Eric Bauza providing voices for classic Looney Tunes characters.
Meanwhile, Sony Pictures is attempting to revitalise the Resident Evil franchise, which has generated over $1.2 billion in global box office revenue since its 2002 debut. Following a previous unsuccessful reboot attempt, the studio has appointed Zach Cregger, the writer and director of the Oscar-winning horror film Weapons, to helm the new project. Austin Abrams stars as Bryan, a medical courier whose life unravels during a delivery to Raccoon City.
Cregger has clarified that the new film will not be a direct adaptation of the video games but rather an original story set within the franchise’s universe. He described the tone as closer to Evil Dead II while remaining faithful to the spirit of the source material. The film, which also stars Paul Walter Hauser and Zach Cherry, is set for release on 18 September 2026.
