Kentucky State basketball player reportedly detained by ICE

Aminata Seck, a senior basketball player at Kentucky State University, was reportedly detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement at Louisville airport on 7 August while travelling to a tournament in New York.

The account, reported by Yahoo Sports citing the Louisville Courier Journal, says Seck was detained after passing through airport security. She was later listed at Grayson County Detention Center, although the listing does not establish her current location or legal status.

Sadiqa Reynolds, the lawyer helping coordinate Seck’s case, said Seck had been moved at least four times between facilities in Clay County, Chicago, Clark County and Grayson County.

Reynolds said Seck may have missed a deadline for student-visa paperwork after back surgery. She also said Seck was dealing with an ACL injury and had limited access to ice or medical attention while in custody. Those claims have not been independently confirmed in the source report.

Kentucky State coach Amani Williams was reportedly advocating for Seck. The university’s athletics website lists Seck, 26, as a 6-foot-4 senior centre originally from Dakar, Senegal. She played 20 games last season and scored 238 points.
