Chargers fall to 0–2 as Derwin James demands honesty
Los Angeles suffered a second home defeat to open the season, with injuries adding to the pressure on the Chargers.
The Los Angeles Chargers have begun the season 0–2 after losing 26–14 to the Las Vegas Raiders at SoFi Stadium, their second home defeat in as many games.
Safety Derwin James used his postgame availability to call for a more direct assessment of the team’s problems. “We got to look each other in the eye, man, and just tell the truth and just get better,” James said, according to Yahoo Sports. He described the performance as “trash” and said anger alone would not fix it.
The Chargers were reportedly favoured in both opening games and entered the season with expectations of competing for the AFC West title. The source reports that only eight of 40 teams that began 0–2 after the NFL adopted a 17-game schedule in 2021 reached the postseason.
The team’s immediate challenge is compounded by its schedule. Five of its next seven games are scheduled on the road, according to the source.
James fractured the pinky finger on his left hand and was forced out of the game. Tight end David Njoku was also carted off with a knee injury after a pass was intercepted. No recovery timelines were provided for either player.
