Katie Taylor retires as three-time undisputed champion
Ireland’s Katie Taylor closed her professional career with a unanimous-decision victory over France’s Flora Pili at Dublin’s Croke Park.
Katie Taylor has retired from professional boxing after defeating France’s Flora Pili by unanimous decision at Dublin’s Croke Park, according to Al Jazeera Global News.
The 40-year-old retained her WBA, IBF and WBO super-lightweight titles and won the vacant WBC belt. The result made Taylor undisputed champion for the third time, as reported by Al Jazeera.
Taylor controlled much of the fight through her movement and timing, while Pili mounted a stronger challenge in the seventh round before Taylor regained control in the eighth. The reported attendance was 80,000.
The victory completed Taylor’s professional record at 26 wins and one defeat. Her farewell included an embrace with Pili after the final bell and an emotional moment with her family.
Taylor won Olympic lightweight gold at London 2012, when women’s boxing made its Games debut, and turned professional in 2016. She went on to win world titles at lightweight and super-lightweight and helped advance women’s boxing in Ireland and internationally.
