Kanter Freedom ejection exposes gaps in WNBA eligibility framework
A courtside confrontation during the Indiana Fever versus Chicago Sky match has highlighted the league’s lack of a defined policy for transgender athlete eligibility.
Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom was ejected from the Indiana Fever versus Chicago Sky game on Sunday following a verbal altercation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud. The incident occurred during a timeout late in the third quarter, when Cloud approached Freedom, who was seated courtside, and began shouting.
Freedom was wearing a black T-shirt that read: "WOMAN noun. adult human female." As the confrontation escalated, he stood with arms outstretched and stepped toward the court before security intervened to direct him away.
Following his ejection, Freedom mocked Cloud by imitating her talking with his hand and waved his arms to the crowd. He held out his shirt while exiting the court area and spoke with a group of police officers before departing Wintrust Arena.
The incident has intensified a national debate regarding transgender athletes in the WNBA, a discussion sparked recently by comments from Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. Freedom, who played 11 years in the NBA, declared himself eligible for the WNBA draft this month, stating he identifies as a woman.
Another former NBA player, Royce White, also declared himself eligible for the draft, identifying as a woman. The move has placed the league’s current regulatory framework under scrutiny.
The collective bargaining agreement signed in March states that "only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA." However, the agreement does not further define the term, and the WNBA currently has no publicly available policy governing the eligibility of transgender or intersex athletes.
