Kaif backs Kohli and Sharma for 2027 World Cup
Mohammad Kaif cites Rohit Sharma’s evolved batting and fitness as key factors in retaining veteran leadership for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has publicly endorsed the continued participation of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the 2027 ODI World Cup, asserting his confidence that the veteran duo will remain central to India’s campaign. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif stated he would “take the guarantee” of both players featuring in the squad, countering growing public discourse regarding the retirement timelines of senior stars and calls for younger talent to assume leadership roles.
Kaif highlighted Rohit Sharma’s improved fitness regime and a shift in his batting temperament as critical reasons for his longevity. He noted that the captain’s approach has evolved, observing that Sharma is no longer “pouncing on every ball” and demonstrating a different temperament as both a captain and a player. Kaif emphasised that Sharma’s passion and commitment to physical conditioning suggest he will manage to compete at the highest level despite the inevitable physical demands of the sport.
The former cricketer predicted that India would be favourites for the tournament, anticipating that the core of the squad which reached the 2023 World Cup final would remain largely intact. He identified Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav, and Shubman Gill as likely key players in the 2027 setup, suggesting that the combination of experience and quality would make India one of the toughest teams to defeat.
Kaif further suggested that Hardik Pandya is expected to be fit and available for the 2027 World Cup, adding to the strength of the predicted lineup. He argued that the opposition would need to play their best cricket to beat India, given the depth of talent retained from the previous cycle. This prediction comes as India prepares for its next immediate assignment, a three-match ODI series against England scheduled for July.
The 2027 ODI World Cup is scheduled to be hosted across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. While Kaif’s assessment provides a clear view of the expected team composition, it remains an opinion rather than a confirmed selection, with the actual squad to be determined by the board and selectors in the lead-up to the tournament.
