Elon Musk loses court battle against Sam Altman and OpenAI after 3-week trial
Oakland panel rules claims time-barred, ending three-week trial without addressing substantive allegations

A nine-member jury in Oakland, California, has delivered a unanimous verdict against Elon Musk in his high-profile legal dispute with Sam Altman and OpenAI, ruling that the plaintiff’s claims were time-barred under the statute of limitations. The decision concludes a three-week trial that centred on allegations regarding the governance and direction of the artificial intelligence organisation.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours before reaching its decision, dismissing the lawsuit on procedural grounds rather than evaluating the merits of the substantive claims. Consequently, the court did not rule on whether OpenAI had breached its charitable trust, engaged in unjust enrichment, or aided and abetted such actions.

Musk’s lawsuit alleged that OpenAI executives, including Altman and Greg Brockman, had steered the organisation away from its original nonprofit mission. The complaint further asserted that Microsoft’s financial backing had facilitated this shift, prompting Musk to seek legal intervention to restore the entity’s founding principles.

Despite the intensity of the three-week trial, the jury’s focus remained strictly on the timing of the filing. By determining that the case was filed after the applicable statutes of limitations had expired, the panel avoided making any findings on the allegations of mission drift or financial misconduct raised by the plaintiff.

The verdict marks a significant procedural resolution for OpenAI and its leadership. While the substantive arguments regarding the company’s governance were not adjudicated, the dismissal on time-barred grounds effectively ends Musk’s current legal challenge against Altman and the organisation.
