Houston Astros closer Josh Hader recorded his 250th regular-season Major League Baseball save by closing out a 3–1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Hader became the 41st pitcher in MLB history to reach 250 regular-season saves. He is 23-for-23 in save chances this season, with a 0.70 ERA in 39 appearances.
The left-hander has allowed 14 hits, 11 walks and four extra-base hits across 38⅓ innings, while striking out 52 batters. His 0.65 WHIP and .109 opponents’ batting average are the lowest among pitchers with at least 20 major-league innings this season, according to Yahoo Sports.
Hader returned on 3 June after nearly 10 months without a major-league appearance. He had ended the previous season on the injured list with a shoulder capsule sprain and began this season sidelined by biceps tendinitis.
The Astros’ bullpen entered the game with the majors’ second-lowest ERA since Hader’s season debut. Baseball Reference data cited by Yahoo Sports places Hader among five relievers to record at least 23 saves with an ERA of 0.70 or lower in their first 39 appearances of a season.
A six-time All-Star, Hader is in the third season of a five-year, US$95 million contract. The reported figures reflect his season at the time of the game and may change.
