Jed York pleads no contest to Ohio misdemeanours as NFL reviews conduct

Jed York, the American investor who controls the San Francisco 49ers and holds significant stakes in English and Scottish football, has pleaded no contest to two misdemeanour charges in Ohio. The legal resolution follows an arrest on Sunday morning at a mobile home community in East Palestine, a location near his birthplace of Youngstown.

According to court records, York was initially charged with engaging in prostitution. However, prosecutors amended the charge to disorderly conduct. He was also charged with possessing criminal tools, a count attributed to his use of a mobile phone to respond to an undercover online prostitution advertisement.

York was released after posting a $5,000 bond. Upon pleading no contest on Monday morning, he was sentenced to one day in jail for both offences to be served concurrently. The court credited him with one day served, effectively satisfying the custodial portion of the sentence.

In addition to the jail time, the plea agreement required York to pay a fine of $1,150. He was also required to complete an online course. Records indicate that $160 seized during the process was to be directed to the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force, while his cell phone was returned to him.

Columbiana County Prosecutor Vito Abruzzino noted that such cases typically conclude with plea agreements. He stated that decisions are made by looking at specific facts of the conduct, evidence provided by police, input from arresting officers, and the defendant's criminal history.

The NFL has issued a statement confirming it is aware of the arrest and is reviewing the matter under its personal conduct policy. While owners are subject to possible fines or suspensions for violations of this policy, the outcome of the review remains pending. Leeds United and Rangers have both declined to comment on the development.
