Jasprit Bumrah's IPL 2026 Struggles Attributed to International Workload and Physical Fatigue
Experts cite exhaustion from the ICC T20 World Cup and England Test series as primary factors behind the slump

Jasprit Bumrah is enduring a severe downturn in his IPL 2026 campaign, recording a career-worst bowling average of 132 with only two wickets in eight games. The Mumbai Indians pacer went wicketless in his first five matches before dismissing Sai Sudharsan on the very first ball of the sixth game against the Gujarat Titans. This inability to secure early breakthroughs has seen batsmen he historically contained, including Travis Head and Sanju Samson, exploit his line and length with multiple sixes.
The statistical decline is stark when compared to his recent history. In IPL 2025, despite missing the opening four games due to a back injury, Bumrah took 18 wickets in 12 matches with an economy rate of 6.68. By contrast, his current average is nearly double that of other bowlers who have bowled 30 or more overs this season, placing him among the most underperforming in the league. This dip coincided with a significant moment of vulnerability for the franchise, as Mumbai Indians failed to defend a total of 200 or more at Wankhede Stadium for the first time in IPL history.
In a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Bumrah conceded 54 runs in four overs, allowing sixes from Heinrich Klaasen and Salil Arora in addition to the top-order hitters. Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth observed that Bumrah lacks his usual zip, noting that none of his deliveries appeared threatening. While Srikkanth did not place direct blame on the player, he suggested that the pacer appears tired after a packed international schedule involving the Asia Cup, the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, and a demanding five-match Test series in England.
Former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin highlighted the psychological toll of the situation, suggesting that negative narratives regarding Bumrah's form may be affecting his mental state and rhythm. Ashwin noted that external pressure began to mount after the team started losing, potentially playing on the player's mind. Former batter Mohammad Kaif added a physical dimension to the analysis, indicating that Bumrah's body may not be fully supporting him and recommending a short break to regain peak fitness.
Mumbai Indians batting coach Kieron Pollard downplayed the severity of the concerns, stating that occasional dips are a natural part of being human and urging focus on Bumrah's long-term contributions. This contrasts with the immediate crisis at hand, where the pacer entered the tournament after bowling 119 overs across three matches in England alone, despite managing a long-standing back issue. The combination of physical fatigue and mental pressure has left Bumrah struggling to find his usual rhythm against top-order opposition.
