Japan and Philippines pledge deeper security and economic ties amid global instability
Prime Minister Takaichi and President Marcos Jr. discuss arms exports and trade pact revisions to bolster regional defence and economic resilience.

Japanese Prime Minister Takaiichi met with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Tokyo on 28 May 2026, signalling a strategic deepening of ties between the two nations. The bilateral talks, held during the Philippine president’s official visit, focused on enhancing cooperation in security and economic sectors against a backdrop of intensifying international tensions.
According to NHK, Prime Minister Takaichi emphasised that the importance of tight coordination between Japan and the Philippines is “higher than ever” due to the challenging global security environment. Both leaders expressed a shared desire to further advance collaboration, particularly in areas critical to regional stability and prosperity.
A key component of the discussion involved Japan’s potential export of arms to enhance the Philippines’ island defence capabilities. This development aligns with broader efforts to strengthen the strategic partnership, which has previously included agreements on defence equipment transfers and infrastructure development. The Philippines has been actively seeking to bolster its maritime security capabilities in response to territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
On the economic front, the leaders addressed the revision of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). While specific timelines for the revision talks were not detailed, the focus on updating trade frameworks underscores the commitment to strengthening economic ties alongside security cooperation.
The diplomatic engagement was accompanied by a state banquet hosted for President Marcos and his wife. The event marked the first appearance of Prince Hisahito at such a diplomatic function, highlighting the ceremonial significance of the visit. The meeting occurs amidst heightened geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific, as well as ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
