James clarifies 'trust the process' remarks amid NBA free agency speculation
LeBron James dismisses claims he is joining Philadelphia, citing long-standing personal motto as he seeks a franchise committed to daily championship habits.
LeBron James addressed ongoing free agency speculation during a live taping of "The Shop" at Fanatics Fest in New York City on Friday. When asked what he values in a new team, the NBA star used the phrase "trust the process," prompting immediate interpretation from the crowd that he was aligning with the Philadelphia 76ers. James quickly clarified that he has employed the slogan since being drafted in 2003, predating the Sixers' adoption of it as an institutional motto.
The 76ers remain among the final suitors for James, alongside the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, and Minnesota Timberwolves. Reports indicate the Sixers were one of the "inner circle" teams on agent Rich Paul’s whiteboard, with Tyrese Maxey’s name highlighted by a star. However, Paul noted that everything shifted following the Sixers' trade of Paul George for Jaylen Brown earlier in the summer.
James emphasised that the most important factor is joining a group with the same motto: "practicing championship habits every day." He stated that fully immersing oneself in the process ensures the outcome takes care of itself, warning that worrying about championships or playoffs causes teams to skip necessary steps in the journey.
Jameer Nelson and Mike Gansey, who are in Philadelphia's front office, are cited as positive factors in the Sixers' pursuit. Gansey was the runner-up to James for Ohio's Mr. Basketball in 2001 and served as assistant general manager in Cleveland during James' second stint with the Cavaliers. Gansey told The Athletic that conversations with Paul have continued since the Jaylen Brown trade.
Gansey expressed respect for James as the best player of all time, noting that the decision is dragging out because James has many good options. He stated that the Sixers would obviously love to have James and believe they would be even better if he decides to come to Philadelphia, but acknowledged he will make the right decision for himself and his family.
