The Jacksonville Jaguars are positioning Travis Hunter to assume a primarily defensive role as the 2026 regular season approaches. Recent practice trends suggest the team is prioritising Hunter’s development as a cornerback over his dual-threat capabilities, marking a strategic decision to leverage his skills on the defensive side of the ball.
According to reports from Jacksonville, Hunter has been participating almost exclusively in defensive drills this week. On Monday, the player recorded zero 11-on-11 offensive snaps, a significant shift from previous training sessions where he had already been practising more at cornerback than wide receiver.
The focus on defence was further cemented during Wednesday’s joint practice with the Carolina Panthers. Hunter played 28 snaps on defence compared to just two on offence, according to Garry Smits of the Florida Times-Union. This disparity in snap counts provides a strong indication that the coaching staff views his defensive contributions as central to the team’s game plan.
Head coach Liam Coen indicated that the staff prefers Hunter to remain on the defensive unit to take mental reps rather than switching to offence. This approach suggests that while Hunter may see limited action at wide receiver, his primary responsibility will be to cover receivers and contribute to the defensive scheme.
Although Hunter has expressed a desire to play every snap on both sides of the ball, the Jaguars appear to have a different operational strategy. The team is not expected to utilise him as a kicker, with Cam Little remaining the primary specialist. Hunter’s recent field goal attempts during practice were described as casual and are not considered a serious evaluation of his kicking ability.
The exact number of offensive snaps Hunter will play in the regular season remains undefined, but current practice data points to a part-time role. This decision reflects a governance of resources within the squad, aiming to maximise Hunter’s impact where the coaching staff believes he can contribute most effectively.
