Middle East live: Israeli military strikes southern city of Tyre, Lebanese media report
Lebanese state media reports fatalities in Christian quarter and Marwanieh following evacuation warnings

The Israeli military struck the southern Lebanese city of Tyre on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, following urgent evacuation warnings issued to residents of the city and surrounding areas. Lebanese state media reported that the attacks resulted in at least 14 fatalities, including casualties in the Christian quarter and the Marwanieh neighbourhood. The strikes occurred against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions, with Iran warning it would resume attacks on Israel if the bombing in Lebanon continued.

According to the Lebanese health ministry, the assault near the Red Cross centre in Tyre claimed five lives and left eight others wounded, four of whom were paramedics. A subsequent strike in Marwanieh killed two people, including a child, and injured ten others. The Israeli army had previously posted messages on social media urging residents to move north of the Zahrani River for their safety, marking the first time the entire city was ordered to evacuate.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz vowed to press on with the military campaign in Lebanon despite the warnings from Tehran. The escalation comes shortly after a fragile ceasefire was established between Iran and Israel in early April 2026, which has been repeatedly tested by cross-border hostilities. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had held discussions with counterparts in Britain, France, Turkey, Qatar, and Pakistan on Sunday regarding these violations, with Tehran insisting that any broader Middle East conflict resolution must include a ceasefire in Lebanon.

In a significant diplomatic development, a delegation of French MEPs led by Manon Aubry and Rima Hassan visited Lebanon to meet with President Joseph Aoun and representatives of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The France Unbowed movement stated the visit was intended to express solidarity with the Lebanese people. Concurrently, the heads of the Pakistani and Lebanese armed forces met in Pakistan to boost cooperation, with Islamabad mediating between the United States and Iran to end the months-long conflict.

While military operations intensified, US President Donald Trump stated that negotiators were in the "final throes" of a Middle East peace deal, suggesting an agreement could be reached within two or three days. However, US Vice President JD Vance told Fox News that while the United States and Israel share interests, their positions do not always align. Meanwhile, an Israeli military spokesperson confirmed the interception of an aerial target from Yemen in the Eilat region, with no injuries reported.

German student councils push for academic decoupling from Israel amid institutional resistance

Student representatives at major German higher education institutions have passed motions to sever ties with Israeli universities, citing complicity in alleged human rights violations. University administrations and federal policy frameworks have pushed back, framing the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement as extremist and prioritising state interests over student-led political statements.
