Israeli ministers condemn Ben-Gvir flotilla video as diplomatic rift widens
The release of footage showing Itamar Ben-Gvir taunting detained activists has triggered rebukes from Israel’s own leadership and international allies, exposing tensions over political optics and state conduct.

Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s national security minister, has sparked a domestic and international political storm after posting a social media video depicting himself taunting detained activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla. The footage, which shows Ben-Gvir mocking handcuffed detainees including a woman shoved to the ground, has drawn sharp condemnation from European leaders and Israeli officials alike.
The video captures detainees bound and forced into stress positions while the Israeli national anthem plays. Ben-Gvir is seen waving a large Israeli flag and shouting at the prisoners. The release of the clip prompted immediate criticism from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who described the footage as unacceptable and a violation of human dignity.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated he would not tolerate the mistreatment of Spanish citizens and announced plans to push for European Union sanctions against Ben-Gvir, who is already banned from entering Spain. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee also weighed in, stating that Ben-Gvir had betrayed the dignity of his nation.
Domestically, the incident has prompted a public rebuke from the highest levels of the Israeli government. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the conduct depicted was not in line with Israel’s values and norms. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar criticised Ben-Gvir on X, stating he had undone tremendous professional efforts and caused harm to the state.
The controversy highlights a growing rift between the Israeli executive leadership and Ben-Gvir regarding political optics and adherence to perceived national norms. While international sanctions target individual officials, the incident has reignited debate over the broader context of Palestinian detention, with reports citing over 9,600 Palestinians currently held in Israeli facilities.
Saar ended his criticism by insisting the video did not represent the true face of Israel. However, the incident has intensified scrutiny on the conditions within Israeli detention centres, where allegations of systemic abuse, including starvation and medical neglect, have been reported. At least 84 Palestinian prisoners are said to have died in custody since October 2023.
The flotilla activists, who were attempting to break the blockade on Gaza, remain a focal point of international attention. The diplomatic fallout underscores the challenges Israel faces in managing its international standing while navigating internal political fractures.
