Israeli flags mark expanding settler presence across West Bank roads

Hundreds of Israeli flags have been placed along roads in the occupied West Bank, particularly near Jenin and across northern and central areas, as settler outposts and mobile homes expand across the landscape.

Residents told Al Jazeera the changes have emerged rapidly along routes connecting towns and cities. Palestinian photographer Faten Abdel Hadi said major landmarks between Qalqilya, Nablus, Tulkarem and Salfit had changed dramatically between June and August.

Palestinians and analysts describe the flag displays as an effort to assert Israeli control and impose a physical and psychological presence. Khaldoun al-Barghouthi, head of Israeli affairs and a researcher at the Palestinian Research Center, said the message was that Israeli settlers were a permanent fixture while Palestinians’ presence was temporary.

The activity reportedly intensified after 7 October 2023, alongside settlement expansion and Israeli military raids. The Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission said Israeli authorities reviewed 113 structural plans for settlement expansion or new settlements during the first half of 2026.
